I love me-time. It’s the fuel to my soul. And as much as I love being around people, people drain me. Although that sounds terrible, it’s totally okay! Knowing who I am helps me cope better with life. One of the things this realization has helped me become aware of are the times when I need to take time for myself. There are times when I need a break and a mini-getaway.
Did you know that me-time is good for you? Me-time reboots your brain, improves your concentration, and makes you more productive! Maybe you’re like me. Maybe you, too, need to have some me-time to recharge. In no particular order, here are my favorite 10 ways to enjoy me-time.
Curl Up With A Great Book
I’m not talking just any kind of book. I mean a page turner. A book that you get so lost in that you lose track of time and food and all reality. A book so great that you fall in love with the characters and forget that they’re not real people. A book that when you read it, the words no longer are words but they become a scene in a movie playing out in your head. THAT kind of book! (Of course, if you like non-fiction, that works too!) I love these kinds of books. Where you can just curl up in a blanket or lay out poolside but whenever you read this book, the world stops and no one else is around- Just you and the characters.
Get Your Binge Watch On
I’m going to assume that you have Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime or something. If you don’t, ummm what kind of world do you live in? (kidding) But seriously.
the practice of watching multiple episodes of a television program in rapid succession, typically by means of digital streaming.
Find a great show and stream to your heart’s content. My current binge watch obsession is F•R•I•E•N•D•S. Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Chandler, Ross and Joey are a part of my people detox routine! If you’re looking for some suggestions, check out this list of some of my favorites (Click Here)
When In Doubt, Bake Cookies
Baking is so therapeutic to me! It’s something about the accurate measurements that brings me a special kind of calm. When I need a moment to just be, I’ll break out the eggs, the flour, the sugar, butter and vanilla! Try baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies! (While they’re baking, you could be reading or binge watching!) My favorite cookie recipe is the Nestle Tollhouse recipe, although now I’ll need to try this recipe with gluten-free flour!
Take a Horizontal Life Pause
This is just a fancy way of saying take a nap. Napping is such a great thing. It’s like pressing the reset button. It’s the perfect way to recharge your batteries from being with others.
Headphones in, World out
Drown out everyone else by cranking up the tunes. Getting lost in your favorite songs is the perfect way to be who you truly are. Spotify is one of my favorite websites and apps. Endless amounts of albums and amazing playlists that keep the music going. Even better? Have a dance party for one! Think Elaine from Seinfeld.
Unplug From Technology
Sometimes you just need to make the phone stop. No text alerts, no Instagram notifications, no emails to check. Just pure silence. The “Do Not Disturb” feature is great when you don’t want to be bothered.
Unsocial, Social Media
This is why I love Pinterest. I can browse and browse and not have to be social with anyone. I get to look at the things that I like and come up with things I may want to do in the future. (Operative words- may, future). This doesn’t require anyone else’s input or opinions. Just me being me.
Have a Relationship with a Pen and Paper
or a keyboard. Writing allows you to dump all that you feel inside outside. From there, you can keep them and reread them or you can burn them. Totally up to you. Blogging is my writing outlet. Oh, and journaling.
Give People a Glimpse into Your World
This totally seems like contradicting advice, but I’m talking about vlogging. Grab your phone’s camera or if you have a better camera, use that. Vlogging let’s you share with people without actually having to be with people. Which is a great win-win!
Get Up, Get Out and Do Something
Go outside! Ride a bike, take a walk, lay by the pool or even go to a playground and just swing. Sometimes, getting fresh air is all you need to refuel and help you get ready for the next dose of people.
What are some ways that you’ll use the next time you need a break? Do you already do any of these? What are some other things that you do? Comment below!
