I can remember the feeling I had the first time I flipped through the pages of Belong Magazine. It was like my heart exploded. Everything that I felt inside was expressed on the pages of a beautifully curated magazine. How could this be? The things I didn’t fully know how to express about being a blogger and my desire to create community were all here in this magazine. I fell in love and I had to get my hands on all of the issues. And I subscribed to the blog. I couldn’t help but want to immerse myself in this amazing thing! Now that I’m in, I never want to leave.
The more I read, the more I wanted to know more about the person behind this wonderfully awesome magazine! I reached out to Brooke and she so sweetly agreed to do an interview for me. I was so nervous about reaching out, but she’s such a doll and was so kind! I hope that you guys enjoy this interview!
|Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m an introvert, Starbucks addict, M&M fiend, wife to my college sweetheart, mother of three, work-from-homer, mid-western girl at heart living in SoCal, dabbler in all things crafty and pursuer of Christ.
What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about helping women know that they matter and that they have a place. I want to connect women in life-giving relationships on and off-line.
What area in your life is God growing you now?
God is teaching me to “be still and know” and then to listen and obey. I just had “be still” tattooed on my wrist as a reminder. I need to remember that God is in control. That he’s got this. He’s got ME.
Tell us the story behind Belong. How did you get started?
As a creative introvert, I began blogging a few years back looking for “my people” and “my place”. I have to admit that it was a failure. Blogging didn’t bring me instant friends and the cozy comfort of community just by having an existence on the internet. In fact, it made me feel even more lost and alone. I was dumbfounded as to where to go to find my place in the insane massiveness of the internet. Just as I wanted it—and still do want it—for myself, I have a heart for community. I have a desire to encourage people in using their voice and for being confident in their value. I have a desire for people to use the screen in front of them to connect beyond that screen. To discover “their place” and find “their people”.
Community is the soul of Belong Magazine which is why we have created a space to highlight some of the amazing resources – networks, conferences, other bloggers and businesswomen, etc… The world wide web is exactly that – a gigantic, messy mass of roads through which it is incredibly hard to find any destination, especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Belong Magazine hopes to be the map – or at least the navigation system. To create. To connect. To encourage. To inspire. So that women can find a place where they belong.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned in launching Belong Mag?
There is never a good time—just begin. You’re never going to have enough money, enough time, enough knowledge. You have to start somewhere.
When you aren’t working on Belong mag, what do you do?
I’m working one of my other two jobs, tending to my family or spending time with our small groups.
What is your greatest satisfaction from Belong Magazine?
Getting notes from women sharing how it has encouraged them and given them the inspiration to get going on their dream.
What were you doing prior to Belong Magazine?
Though I’m hoping to transition to Belong full time, I’ve been working in healthcare management for nearly 20 years.
If you could leave the readers with one thought, what would it be?
